Why "Rio Michelle"?
Rio is a Spanish word for River. Based on Spanish grammar, anything from chairs, buildings, nature and so on is always named in feminine form. With this, most people believed that Rio is feminine because it means river. This misconception is also heightened by the popularity of Rio Locsin in the 1970's, a female actor who until now is one of the respected artist in the Philippines.
Nonetheless, with the availability of information through the internet, I have found out that Rio as a person's name is in masculine form. While I was happy to know that, I realized that it doesn't matter, anyway if I have a feminine name. In reality, it only means that my parents recognized gender equality that they named their boy with a girl's name - which is more so with my second name!
So, let's analyzed Michelle. Michelle is a French derivative of the English Micheal for Archangel Micheal. The name Micheal means "the soldier of God" - which the angel is always known for. But, Michelle is a feminine form of the French masculine Michel, by which my mother mistook as appropriate for me. It was her love of books that she named me Michelle from Michel d'Notre Dame or popularly known as Nostradamus (but she overlooked the spelling).
Finally, (before I forget) both names are actually the last syllable of both my parent's names. Rio is from Mario - my father's, and Michelle from Noemi of my mother's. They said they have to choose among Marino, Micheal, and Miguel for my second name but choose Michelle instead.
